Day of Caring

United Way’s Day of Caring, in partnership with Emporia State University and the Flint Hills Technical College, will take place on Saturday morning, September 14th.  It is an event that connects energetic student volunteers with several of United Way’s Community Partners agencies to provide short term, project-focused volunteer service. Service activities will take place at several Community Partner locations in Emporia. Day of Caring demonstrates that volunteering truly brings out the best in all of us. Emporia State University, Flint Hills Technical College, students, and United Way all work together to lend a helping hand. It is an opportunity to put the mantra UNITED IN PURPOSE into action!

United Way's Community Partner receive priority consideration for our event; other nonprofits may be invited to submit proposals if funds and space allow. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to utilize volunteer efforts in your programs. In addition to connecting organizations with volunteers, United Way of the Flint Hills is offering grants to help fund the projects. This is a great opportunity to make building and office improvements if you don’t have the funds, staff, or time to get the work done!

We hope you will submit a project proposal! To do so, complete the form below by August 26th, 2024.

If you have any questions about this application, please contact Daphne Mertens at (620) 342-7564.

ORGANIZATIONS may have a single or multiple projects.

PROJECTS must better your organization and do not have to have a budget component in order to be approved.

Ideas for projects can include but are not limited to:

Gardening, cleaning, painting, sorting donations, etc.

Building fences, sheds, installing shelves or cubicles

Organizing offices, making packets, etc.

Use your imagination!

FIVE or more volunteers are required for a project. The more the merrier…remember a Day of Caring can also be a Day of Fun!

SAFETY is our number one priority for volunteers.

Includes but not limited to:

No operation of heavy equipment or machinery

No specialized labor projects, i.e. masonry, tiling, stump removal, etc.

No installations or electrical repair

No unsafe areas: roofs, high trees, etc.

PLAN, PREPARE, PROVIDE

Plan for enough work to keep volunteers engaged for 2 hours.

Plan well and inform staff of the project.

Prepare all of the supplies and the area(s) that will be worked on.

Provide adequate staffing and instructions for the entire 2 hours.

Provide refreshments (water and light snack) and access to bathroom facilities.

If applicable, please provide an itemized list of supplies and cost. Projects do not have to have a budget component in order to be considered. To be eligible for funding, projects must utilize volunteers on the event date.

We will attempt to fund as many projects as possible and are most interested in projects with a budget of $300 or less. Award amounts are dependent on the number and requested amounts of proposals received. Funding will be on a reimbursement basis after the Day of Caring. Reimbursement forms will be sent after proposal acceptance, and will be due no later than Friday, September 28, 2024.

Use this budget form to upload your budget for the project.
